Statements
DISCUSS THIS ARTICLE

During some listening activities, I read out a statement while students respond showing me that they understand.  Some statements require students to perform a physical action, categorize words, translate, or determine the accuracy of your statements by marking true or false.

General Statement Activities

Active Response
When students hear a specific word or grammatical feature such as tense or gender, they respond by:

Standing up/Sitting down

Example:

Stand up when you hear an adjective in the masculine form.  Sit down when you hear it in the feminine form.

Clapping

Example:

Clap when you hear a verb in the preterite tense.

Raising their right or left hand

Example:

Raise your left hand for ser and your right hand for estar.

Writing out the answer on individual whiteboards

Note: Instruct students to close their eyes and think for themselves when they raise their hand, stand up, clap or perform any other gesture.

    Category
    1. Describe a person, place, thing, or idea.
    2. Students match what you are describing to the appropriate category.

      Example:

Tiene cuatro patas, una cola, le gusta la leche, y dice “meow”.
Tiene dos brazos, dos, piernas, diez dedos, una cabeza, y lleva ropa.

    Definition

    2. Students put a number by the word or picture you are describing.

    Match
    1. Read out a definition.
    2. Students put a number by the word, picture, or category you are describing:

      Example:

Describe the weather. Students put a number beside the corresponding season.

Hace frío y nieva.  (Students mark invierno)
Hace mucho calor.  (Students mark verano)

    Translation
    1. Say a sentence in Spanish.
    2. Students write the English translation or tell what it means orally.

True/False Activities
    Command with Action
    1. Read a command.
    2. Perform an action to demonstrate the command.  It could be correct or incorrect.

    3. Example:

Say “siéntense” (sit down) but you stand up or say “levántense” (stand up) and then stand up.

      • Students indicate whether the action was true or false.
      • If it was incorrect, students demonstrate the correct command.

    Command with Picture
    1. Read a command.
    2. Show a picture with the right or wrong action.
    3. Students indicate true or false.

    Is it true?
    1. Each student writes down in Spanish five things about themselves that are true and five things that are false.
    2. Each student reads their list aloud without disclosing what is true and what is false.
    3. Students guess which items on the list are true and which are false.

    Logic Statements
    1. Read true/false statements based on logic.
    2. Students mark true of false.

      Example:

      Hace calor en el invierno.
It is hot in the winter.

      Los perros dicen “meow”.
      Dogs say meow.

    Picture

    2. Describe the picture
    3. Meanwhile, students mark true or false.

    Story, Dialogue, or Passage
    1. Write out True and False statements based on a passage you will read.
    2. Write one statement per piece of paper.  I like to use colorful paper or paper that relates to what we are studying.
    3. Place each piece of paper on the walls in the room.
    4. Students read and answer each question based on what they know about the subject or story.
    5. Afterwards, read a story, dialogue or other type of passage that corresponds with the questions.
