Listening Games
DISCUSS THIS ARTICLE

Games are a fun way to practice and reinforce listening skills.  Some students may view games as “play” time and not take it seriously so be sure to set some rules before beginning the game.  My favorite games in class are Bingo and I Spy.

Listening Games

    Bingo with Numbers
    1. Make 3x3 or 5x5 bingo cards or students can make their own.
    2. Read out the number in Spanish or give a simple math problem for students to solve.
    3. Students then mark the correct number on their sheet.
    4. The first student who yells bingo and tells you the correct answers in the correct order wins.
    5. Students win if they have one of the following:
      • Down
      • Across
      • Four Corners
      • Diagonal
      • Each Square
    6. To make the game last longer, tell the class only down wins, only across wins, only four corners, or the whole card.

    Bingo with Pictures
    1. Look for clip-art for your bingo cards.  Search the internet or your textbook.  Many textbooks have clip art pictures on CD Rom that you can use.
    2. Make 3x3 or 5x5 bingo cards on your computer, write BINGO on the top, and create a FREE space.
    3. Add pictures to the bingo cards.
    4. Cut and paste the pictures from the internet or from the CD Rom to the squares on the Bingo sheet or make photocopies of the pictures, cut them out, and make bingo cards manually by taping pictures to each square so you can remove them, make a copy of the bingo card, then rearrange pictures on the card and make more copies.
    5. Laminate the bingo cards if you can.
    6. Make large flashcards of the pictures that you can use with the whole class.
    7. Before playing bingo, hold up the picture flashcards and ask students in Spanish “¿Qué es esto? (What is this?) while students respond with “Eso es un lápiz, un pupitre, una silla…(That is a pencil, a desk, a chair...)
    8. When the game begins, call out the word or phrase in Spanish.
    9. Students identify the correct picture by putting a chip, bean or some other marker on the card.
    10. The first student who yells bingo and tells you the correct answers in the correct order wins.
    11. Students win if they have one of the following:
      • Down
      • Across
      • Four Corners
      • Diagonal
      • Each Square
    12. To make the game last longer, I will tell the class only down wins, or only across wins, only four corners, etc.
    Bingo with Vocabulary
    1. Make 3x3 or 5x5 bingo cards or students  can make their own.
    2. If students make their own, give them a list of vocabulary words to write on their blank Bingo cards.  The words should be in a different on each card.
    3. Read out the Spanish definition, description, or the English meaning for each word.
    4. Students mark the vocabulary word described.
    Describe the Word
    1. Divide the class into two teams.
    2. Assign a word to a student who then describes the word without saying it.
    3. Students cannot point, use gestures, or make noises.  They can only describe the word orally until their team guesses the correct answer.
    4. Allow 10-15 seconds per word.
    5. If their team guesses the correct word, they receive two points.  If they do not, the other team can guess.  If they are correct, they receive a point.

    Flyswatter
    1. You will need two flyswatters and an overhead projector, LCD projector, or pictures to post on the wall.
    2. Post two sets of the same pictures, one for each team.
    3. Divide students into two teams.
    4. One person from each team comes to the front of the classroom.
    5. Say the word, phrase, definition, or description in Spanish.
    6. The first team to swat the corresponding picture wins a point.

    True/False Competition
    1. Read aloud a short story several times.
    2. Instruct students to listen carefully for facts from the story.
    3. Divide the board in half by drawing a line, one half per team.  Write cierto and falso on both sides of the board.
    4. Divide the class into two teams.
    5. Each team stands up and forms a line.
    6. Read a sentence with information from the story.
    7. Some information will be true and some will be false.
    8. One student from each team runs to the board and touches cierto or falso.
    9. The first student to touch the correct word on the correct side of the board wins a point for the team.
    10. The student can correct the false statement for an additional point.

    Yo Espío
    1. Give students a copy of the class seating chart.
    2. Project the seating chart on the board.
    3. Tell students that you have randomly selected one student, but you are not going to tell them who it is. They must guess based on your descriptions.
    4. Some statements describe the person.
    5. The student has brown hair.  (Students cross out the names of all students who do not have brown hair.)
    6. The student is wearing red. (Students cross out the students who are wearing red.)
    7. The student has a green notebook.  (Students cross out the names of all students who do not have a green notebook.)
    8. Some statements tell who it is not
    9. The student is not wearing jeans. (Students cross out the names of all students who are not wearing jeans.)
    10. The student is not sitting by the window. (Students cross out the names of students who are sitting by the window.)
    11. The student is not sitting in the first desk of any row. (Students cross out the names of students who are sitting in the first desk of any row.)
    12. You can describe the student based on: location in the room, physical descriptions, objects near the student, objects the student has, etc.
    13. Students cross out each person that it is not until all but one name is crossed out.
    14. Ask students ¿Quién no fue? ("Who is out?") after each clue.
    15. Ask students why they think it was or wasn’t a certain student.  Students respond in Spanish.
    16. Cross out the students’ names on the seating chart which is projected on the board.
    17. Give the student you chose a prize at the end of the game.

Teach-nology - Teach-nology has a great online Bingo Card maker.  I absolutely love this website and use it often to make bingo cards as a vocabulary review. Just type in the words and it scrambles each card for you.

Books

I have used the Larousse Spanish dictionary many times in class, and I have found it especially helpful when I am playing vocabulary bingo and want to say the definition or description in Spanish.  With my beginning level classes, I have had to modify some of the definitions to easier vocabulary but it is still a very valuable resource.

Board Games in Spanish

For numbers bingo I bought a bingo set from Amazon and I use it whenever I teach numbers. I also laminated the cards so they will stay clean and last a long time.

Here are some other games I have used in my classroom for listening practice.
