DISCUSS THIS ARTICLE

One way to measure comprehension and incorporate creativity at the same time to is to have students create illustrations based on what they had.  I don’t grade students on their artistic talent but rather on how accurate their drawing is.  For example, a student is instructed to draw a happy face but instead draws a sad face.

Illustration Activities

    Blindfolded Illustrations
    1. Students come up to the board to draw what they hear.
    2. Blindfold them before they start drawing.
    3. Instruct students to draw certain objects such as an outfit they would wear to school or the contents of their backpack.
    4. Remove the blindfold.
    5. Students identify each picture in Spanish.
    Grid Drawing Activity
    1. Create a grid with a number in each square.
    2. Dictate an easy-to-draw word while saying the number of the square.

      Example:

      • Dibuja una bandera en cuadrado número dos.
Draw a flag in square number two.
      • Dibuja una cara feliz en cuadrado número cinco.
Draw a happy face in square number five.
      • Dibuja un reloj en cuadrado número siete.
Draw a clock in square number seven.

    Partner Picture Description
    1. Pair students up and pass out a picture folder to each student.
    2. Students should keep their picture hidden from their partner.
    3. Student A describes the picture while student B draws what student A describes.
    4. Student B then describes a picture while Student A draws.
    5. When they are finished they compare their drawings to the original.

    Silly Sentence Illustrations
    1. Send several students to the board at a time and ask them to illustrate a sentence that you will read in Spanish.
    2. Make the sentence illogical and silly so students will have to understand the individual words in order to know what to draw.
    3. Students must refrain from using words, letters, numbers or symbols in their pictures.

      Example:

El elefante y la vaca se casaron.  Dibuja sus dos hijos.
The elephant and the cow got married. Draw their two children.

Un gato prepara una pizza.  Dibuja la pizza y los ingredientes que incluye el gato.
A cat makes a pizza.  Draw the pizza and the ingredients that the cat includes.

La Señora Gómez fue de compras y compró: (Mrs. Gomez went shopping and bought:)

      • Un elefante más pequeño que mi dedo de pie (an elefant smaller than my toe)
      • Una pizza más grande que California (a pizza bigger than California)
      • Una camisa con cinco mangas (a shirt with five sleeves)
      • Un perro con seis patas y con tres colas (a dog with six paws and three tails)
