Categorizing words appeals to logical thinkers.  In addition, it is an excellent activity to keep students focused on the listening content.  Students can listen for vocabulary words and sounds.

Categorizing Activities


    Categorize vocabulary words
    1. Read or play a listening passage.
    2. Students list words from the passage that pertain to a particular category. 

      Example:

      The passage is about food so students list all foods mentioned and categorize them as fruits, vegetables, meats, or dairy products in a food pyramid.

    What’s that sound?
    1. Read or play a passage.
    2. Students list all words that contain a particular letter or sound and write them down.  
    Example:

    Students listen to the following passage and list all words that contain the “u” sound.

    Hay una chica.  La chica se llama Lupe.  Lupe es estudiante.  Estudia en una universidad en Cuba.  A ella le gusta estudiar.

    Which does not belong?
    1. Read out several words at a time.
    2. Students indicate which word does not belong in a given sequence.

      Example:

      1. plátanos, manzanas, pollo, piña (pollo does not belong)
      2. gatos, ojos, perros, pájaros  (ojos does not belong)
